大祓式（おおはらえしき）は、6月30日の夏越の大祓と12月31日の年越の大祓の年二回執り行われます。年越の大祓は、一年の後半を終え、新年を迎えるに当たって半年の生活の罪穢（つみけがれ）を祓い清めて、新たな気持ちで新年を迎える神事です。

The Oharae Ceremony, the Great Purification Ceremony is an ancient Shinto ritual held twice a year, June 30 and December 31. We purify our impure and begin the new year with a fresh mind and open heart.
