平安時代の1101年、大宰権帥大江匡房により始められ、菅原道真公ご在世の往時を偲び、御神霊をお慰めするとともに、国家の平安、さらには五穀豊穣を感謝する秋祭りで、太宰府天満宮で最も大切なお祭りです。
往古の伝統を継承するこの「神幸式大祭」は、福岡県の無形民俗文化財に指定されています

This is the most important event of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.Once a year, Mikoshi, a portable shrine, symbolizing Michizane Sugawara, deity of learning, is carried from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine to Enoki Shrine, accompanied by several hundred people dressed in Heian-period (794 to 1185 AD) costumes.
On 22nd of September, the spirit of Michizane comes to visit Enoki Shrine, where he lived in exile. The next day, it returns to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. At night of September 25th, the pond in Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is beautifully illuminated with lanterns and 1,000 candles.
It is an autumn festival to seek Michizane’s divine virtues and give thanks to the gods for an abundant crop.
